Queensgate

Queensgate is one of the nineteen fortified castles that once lined the Wall, built by the Night's Watch in centuries past to defend the realm against threats from beyond. By the time of Jon Snow's command, it had long stood empty and abandoned, its stones crumbling and its purpose forgotten, like most of its sister forts. When Jon negotiated the passage of Tormund Giantsbane and thousands of free folk through the Wall, he faced the immediate problem of where to house them. The abandoned castles offered the only viable shelter, and Jon assigned several to wildling leaders as their new seats, a decision that provoked deep unease among his own officers.

Assignment to Morna White Mask

Jon Snow granted Queensgate to Morna White Mask, a warrior witch and chieftain among the free folk. She was one of the wildling leaders who swore oaths to Jon after Tormund's people came south, and her reputation as a fierce fighter made her a logical choice to hold a castle on the Wall. The assignment was part of Jon's broader strategy to distribute the free folk across multiple forts, reducing the strain on Castle Black's resources and spreading potential threats. Bowen Marsh, the Lord Steward, objected strenuously, warning that placing wildlings in castles like Queensgate would give them fortified positions from which they could cut off Castle Black from the rest of the Wall. Jon overruled him, insisting that the free folk needed to be housed and that Queensgate, like the other forts, would be garrisoned under the Watch's overall authority.

Strategic Significance and Risks

Queensgate's location on the Wall made it a potentially valuable asset if properly manned, but its assignment to a wildling chief carried significant risks. Marsh's concern that Queensgate and Oakenshield, granted to Tormund, could be used to isolate Castle Black reflected a genuine strategic vulnerability.
